History

The history of Heartland Lutheran High School begins in 1992 when a small group of people came together to discuss the feasibility of Lutheran secondary education in Central Nebraska.

After years of hard work, prayer, and God's guidance, Heartland Lutheran High School opened its doors for the 2000-2001 school year.  That first year, classes were held at Peace Lutheran Church.  The student body consisted of 5 boys and the staff consisted of Mr. Curt Fischer and Mrs. Jackie Zehendner.  This core group chose the school's colors (red, navy blue, and white) as well as the school mascot (Red Hornets.)   At semester, Mrs. Keilig joined the staff along with some student transfers.  A highlight of the year was the school's trip to Washington, D.C. to witness President Bush's inauguration.  In the Spring, the athletic program at HLHS started with boys' golf.  The first students of HLHS have many more memories, too, such as playing hand chimes for various groups and going out to lunch every Friday.

The first building at the site of Heartland Lutheran High School was completed in March of 2001.  Upon completion, the school moved right in.  The first building consists of four classrooms, two offices, a media center, two restrooms, and a faculty lounge.  Until the 2006 addition was completed, this building also housed all lockers.  The students ate lunch in the media center (which also served as the meeting place for chapel and school assemblies.)  Today, this building is used for many classes.  The original offices have been modified to allow a hallway to the new building.  The new guidance office and athletic director's office will be completed soon.

In its second year of operation, Heartland Lutheran High School saw some changes.  First, the school day was changed from block scheduling to an eight-period day.  Second, another staff member--Mr. Tom Schwehn--joined the staff.  Third, boys' basketball was added.  The student body remained small enough to take a trip to Denver, Colorado.

The third year of HLHS brought still more "firsts".  Luke Bremer graduated as teh first Senior at HLHS.  Mrs. Jennifer Blake was hired as the English teacher to allow Mr. Fischer more time with administrative duties.  Ms. Ardene Babb was hired to start
the Spanish program.  More electives were offered and more extra-curricular activities such as volleyball and mock trial were offered.  With a growing student body and the addition of more athletic programs, HLHS needed to find places to practice.  The YMCA, Babel's Gym in Wood River, Third City Christian Church's gym, and St. Paul Lutheran Church were all used as practice sites.

In 2006 our new building that included classrooms, offices, and a gymnasium was finished and changed many ways of doing things at HLHS!  It was a pleasure to have our own practice facility, a place that we could conduct all of the HLHS events, and we now had HOME volleyball and basketball games!

We now had room to grow and it was apparent that HLHS was here to stay!
